I found out that there is nothing like a giant floor pillow to make a room feel cozy.
We have this extra room in the middle of our house where my husband and I just really had no idea what to do with. It was literally a room where you pass through the one door to enter it and then exit through another door on the other side in order to get to the next room. It was a room for everyone to just pass by…literally. For that reason alone, a bedroom wouldn’t work, and it was too small and awkward for an office. There was no storage built in, so storing objects wasn’t even an option, even if we wanted to store objects at an awkward spot in the middle of the house.
Solution…
One day the idea arrived for a playroom for my daughter. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Her nursery doesn’t have enough storage, nor is big enough to store all of her stuffed animals and toys. I also had more pictures and decorations that I ended up not using in there due to changing the theme of her nursery.
The awkward room is also right next to her room. We thought, why not put something in there that she can use and enjoy, while we also utilize it as a place to keep the rest of her belongings in a cute, DIY storage solution? Perfect solution.
It’s been a gratifying journey so far, because the room looks completely different from the dark, wood-paneled, and messy room that it started out as. I still have a few things left to do, but it looks like the dream princess playroom that I had envisioned, and it makes me so happy!
A Comfy Place to Read and Play
My daughter is only about to turn one, but we are going to be in this house for at least a few years, and it’s the perfect place for her to play whenever the baby gates are up and I have some work to get done!
In the one corner, I really wanted to implement a cozy reading area. Even though she is too young yet to read by herself, we still read stories together of course! It would also provide another place for her to possible nap whenever she was older.
I shopped my home!
It was difficult finding a giant floor pillow that wasn’t too expensive, the right amount of “cushiness,” and was also pink! I then decided to shop my home to se the materials I had on hand. I found an old pink sheet that I didn’t use anymore, which would be perfect. And had fabric scraps that I had been keeping in case of making a pillow…such as this! In case I didn’t have enough, I had some leftover stuffing. Not only did I not have to spend a cent, but it was also a sustainable project! Perfect!
DIY “Home Thrifted” Giant Floor Pillow
Materials
- Fabric of your choice (thrifted or otherwise)
- stuffing/ fabric scraps
- sewing pins
- scissors
- thread
- sewing machine
- sewing needle
1. Measure and cut pieces
First, I measured out the pieces of my fabric. I made four, long, side pieces that measured around 35″ long and 6″ in depth for enough cushiness. I then cut two squares for the top and bottom that measured 35″ x 35″. This way, they matched up with the side pieces when it came time to sew them together. Remember, you can make this pillow as big as you want to!
2. Pin together
This part might be a little tricky. But don’t worry! The good thing is that you can pin the pieces together and sew them in the way that’s easiest for you!
Personally, what was easiest for me was pinning all the side pieces to one of the big top or bottom pieces and then sewing them together. Make sure that the wrong sides of the fabric is facing up as you pin together. The right side should be facing down.
It helps to create pull the hems off the ground and pin the pieces edge to edge so the edge of the fabric does not show on the finished product. I know this might seem a little confusing, but the pictures show what I mean below.
Pin the side pieces on and sew one at a time until all the side pieces are attached.
3. Sew the corners together
When all of the side pieces are sewn on, you’ll need to sew the corners together. Make sure the pillow is turned inside out as you sew the corners together. This way, when you sew the final top piece on, you can turn the pillow right side out in order to stuff it.
4. Sew the top piece on
This is what the cover should look like before sewing the top on.
When all the corners are sewn together, the pillow should look like a box with the “top open.” This is so you can sew the top piece on and connect it to all the side pieces. After this, you have a pillow cover without stuffing.
Make sure to leave a 4″ opening in order to turn the pillow cover inside out. This is also so you can stuff it with stuffing. This is what it should look like:
5. Time to stuff!
Now it’s time to stuff your pillow! I cut every possible piece of scrap fabric that I could find in my home. I had fabric scraps, old t-shirts, towels (clean of course), and even blankets that we no longer used.
Here I am cutting up fabric while binging The Sorry Girls videos on Youtube.
To be honest, I made my pillow a bit bigger than I had originally planned…so I was cutting up fabric for days. Here is a glimpse into the chaos that was on my floor during that time:
Once you are done stuffing to your desired cushiness, sew up the 4″ opening.
Then, you’re done with your giant floor pillow!
This pillow is so comfy, and my daughter LOVES it! She kept crawling on an laying on it before it was finished. It was the cutest thing!
We hope you enjoy your new DIY giant floor cushion! 🙂
